FAQ - General/What Is Your Beef With Microsoft

Maior Wiki | FAQ - General | RecentChanges | Preferences

  • What's your beef with Microsoft?
So I advocate not playing the PC version because it supports Microsoft. Can the responses that you're really supporting Squeenix with the PC version because that ain't true. Any time you run any software on a Microsoft operating system you are supporting Microsoft.

As for what's wrong with Microsoft, there's plenty. Let's start with the technical problems. Those are always my favorites because I'm such a [technical person].

Exhibit A: Security
Perhaps the easiest thing to find wrong with Microsoft's products is their general lack of real security. Microsoft likes to practice something called "security through obscurity" wherein they secure their systems by obscuring them or hiding their secrets. Any cryptographer worth his weight in beans will tell you that this isn't a good practice and will point to the code-breaking efforts of World War II as a great example of why it doesn't work. Securing something by obscuring its workings just makes it so that the "Good Guys" can't typically find problems before the "Bad Guys". Also, the way that Microsoft locks their cruddy OS down with supposed IP junk, it means that the "Good Guys" can't fix these problems if they find them. Hell, they even [once took measures to prohibit the spread of information about bugs in their OSes!] I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. To read more on this, check my [classnotes].

Microsoft also practices insecure computing by tying as much of their high-level apps to their low-level kernel as possible. This is why it's such a haven for virus writers and script kiddies. When your web-browser is tied to the kernel in such a way that it allows bits of JavaScript? or ActiveX? code to be able to wipe out your system, or your email client can run viri and infect your system without you doing jack, there is something wrong.

Finally, they often take a very long time to fix problems in their OS. There's [the time they sat on a serious security problem affecting most modern Windows OSes for more than 6 months before fixing it] and let's not forget the "Netscape Engineers are Weenies" exploit that sat around in their servers for over three years.

Exhibit B: Bugs and dumb decisions
Microsoft has a history of deliberately introducing bugs and design-flaws into their products. From the classic ["640k should be enough for anyone"] limit to the modern [CSS problems that Internet Explorer has], Microsoft sure does pull some boners.

Why do these things? Well sometimes it's because they don't think things through (the 640k memory limit, the buggy BIOS problem) other times they are trying to "embrace and extend" (read "break so no one will use the competition, like with their b0rken web-standards).

Exhibit C: All your base are belong to us
From the recent DRM additions to the MS Passport nightmare, Microsoft doesn't think you should be allowed to think for yourself. They treat their customers like mindless sheep that need to be herded and controlled. This is sort of a moral and ethical issue, but it does fit nicely into this technical problem area. For one, ever try to convince a Windows install that misconfigured something that it was wrong? Try it sometime, it's a blast. Windows doesn't think you know what you are doing, so it will go to great lengths to undo any fixes you may make. Case in point, a year ago I was working on a laptop for my job and stupid Windows update installed a driver that was incompatible with the laptop's video chipset. I could change the driver to one that worked, but when you rebooted Windows insisted that it was misconfigured and would replace it with the wrong one. I ultimately had to rebuild that machine.

Another great example is this .NET Passport fiasco. First of all, it's [easily cracked]. Second of all, Microsoft wants it to be your single sign-on for online shopping, banking, whatever. Third of all, [there are serious privacy concerns]. I don't know about you, but I certainly dont want all my login and financial information being "held" by a single entity.

Okay, so this brings us with the ethical problems. These ones really cheese me off.

Exhibit D: Microsoft's Monopoly
Alright, so this is an easy one. Microsoft controls the desktop market with some 85-90% dominant share. It's so bad, [the US] and [European nations] have taken them to court. If you don't think they have an unfair monopoly, you're a moron... So I'll just move on.

Exhibit E: Microsoft's Two-Faced Approach to things
A lot of the time, Microsoft and Bill Gates try to do charitable or "nice" things, while doing the complete opposite at the same time.

The one example of this that hits home to me is the fact that [Microsoft donates millions to schools] and yet [extorts millions from schools at the same time]. Plus, what are these millions they are donating? Why, those are Microsoft products primarily, silly! Stuff that costs them next to nothing to produce but which has a "market value", so how much is that in donations, really? This is the big reason [Tux4Kids] exists.

There's lots more, I could go on all day, but I am getting tired of writing. Go check out http://fuckmicrosoft.com/, specifically http://fuckmicrosoft.com/content/whatsbad.shtml and http://fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml .

  • So what are you? A Mac user?
No. Apple is no better than Microsoft. In fact, [Apple is Microsoft] so supporting them supports Microsoft.

I am more into freedom, quality, robustness, and security. I use [Linux]... specifically [Debian GNU/Linux].
